    Interested in a highly sought after position within the Powertrain Engineering, Inc. company at AVL?  The Project Engineer I - Controls Graduate Rotation position is an ideal position for entry level engineers to start at and begin to develop their career as an engineer in the automotive industry with a focus in the controls/systems/calibration area.


    The Graduate Rotation Program – Controls provides diverse engineering project responsibilities, engages participants in global teams, provides cross functional job experiences and networking opportunities with senior leadership and management. The program consists of 4 placements (each lasting 3 months) within the Powertrain Engineering Organization spread over a 12 month time period. 

    • Powertrain Testing
    • Vehicle
    • Development
    • Calibration, systems and Controls


    A primary mentor will be assigned upon joining the AVL graduate rotation program, and through each rotation a temporary supervisor will assist directly within that time period.

    Upon completion of each rotation an evaluation will be completed by the temporary supervisor and will be facilitated back by the primary mentor


    Upon successful completion of all rotations, the engineer will take up a role within the Calibration, Systems and Controls department.


    AVL will also provide an incentive training course provided by an outside specialist training resource to ensure the fundamentals of key automotive technology are understood and provide a focus on embedded software development.


    Final interviews for the position will be completed towards the end of 2018, and the position will start in January or Spring of 2019 pending the candidate's graduation date.


    Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Employer will not sponsor an applicant for a work visa for this position.


    During each rotation the engineer will be involved in real engineering projects, supporting the program teams to deliver cutting edge solutions. The scope of these projects will vary depending on current program activity. This project work will serve as on the job training.



    • Support the Business Development process for specific programs
    • On time delivery of program expectations with favorable feedback
    • Active involvement in Annual Review and Work Planning Process


    • High level understanding of automotive market, industry trends and technology.
    • Able to apply critical thinking to problem solving.
    • Actively pursues awareness of Global AVL technology capabilities
    • Basic knowledge of powertrain and/or vehicle systems
    • Ability to use Matlab / Simulink for controls and plant model development
    • Basic ability to capture customer requirements and work with the team to ensure they are met
    • Basic understanding of control systems, testing methods, and data analysis techniques


    • Able to work independently with moderate supervision
    • Able to work effectively with customers and other program staff and team members
    • Positive mindset with an ability to learn new tasks / concepts quickly
    • Active pursuit of personal improvement
    • Effective communication with all levels of the program team

    Experience and Education

    • Min, Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or related field required
