    The cross-functional program execution team executes a wide variety of vehicle and powertrain system simulation, design, and development projects. The Tech Specialist – Battery Systems role is responsible for the technical delivery of the Battery System portion of the project. Responsibilities include: Functional Requirements definition for the Battery Systems and components, and overall system performance, reliability, serviceability, and cost.


    The specific roles of a Technical Specialist in this effort include:

    • Recognized as a subject matter expert in Battery Systems (including having authored technical papers for publications), and demonstrate technical leadership in energy storage system development
    • Defines, plans, leads, and performs System Component Development, System Integration, and System Verification & Validation activity and other relevant engineering project work within project team as required
    • Lead the definition and execution of: functional requirements, system boundaries, component & subsystem interface definition, and performance tracking. Support functional safety activities
    • Interface with the AVL global battery expertise and ensure globally defined process are followed
    • Responsible for the technical delivery of battery system programs, and for supporting the program manager for management of the project finances and time lines
    • Working with Skill Team Leaders and Engineering Director to ensure programs are resourced effectively
    • Mentors less experienced Engineers in the field of Battery Systems
    • Works on specific phases or aspects of projects such as technical studies, preparation of specifications, development of battery systems/components, technical plans, powertrain system and component testing, data analysis and validation
    • Supports/ensures data quality and writes technical project reports.
    • Reviews project for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, and customer requirements, including opinions and interpretations
    • Coordinates activities concerned with technical development, scheduling, and resolving engineering test issues
    • Maintains a cutting-edge knowledge of battery systems
    • Leads the planning and execution of energy storage system research and development activities
    • Leads, organizes, and contributes to customer meetings
    • Other duties as required to insure project success


    Business Development Team Roles:

    The business development team executes a wide variety of activities to develop new commercial opportunities.  The Tech Specialist – Battery Systems role is responsible for the supporting these activities as needed. Detailed responsibilities include: identification of and assessment of relevant emerging technologies and products, supporting the planning of resources to prepare for estimated future needs of the organization, development, and support of new and existing key customer relationships.


    The specific roles of a Technical Specialist in this effort include:

    • Defines, executes, and supports system performance and research and development activities
    • Supports, organizes, and leads customer meetings
    • Identifies and supports business and strategic company development activities
    • Proposal generation, review, and approval



    Technical Specialist – Battery Systems is expected to have demonstrated performance abilities in the following areas:


    • Quote Leader for a large size program
    • Support the Business Development process for all clients, in the area of Battery Systems
    • Efficient on time delivery of program expectations with consistently high feedback
    • Develop a significant relationship with the customer with the objective of securing additional and future business
    • Technical
      • Identify, initiate, and support opportunities for technology development, process improvements, tool development, and knowledge capture and re-use.
      • Provide effective developmental leadership for other departmental staff in areas of expertise
      • Published at least 3 papers accepted by a professional organization or 3 patents awarded
      • Global AVL implementation of technology
      • Expertise in regulatory and market segment requirements and end-user expectations
      • Deep knowledge of hybrid/electrification technology within passenger car, medium duty, or heavy duty
      • Subject matter expert in HV battery/energy storage system development, with knowledge in the following areas:
        • Battery Management System development and integration
        • Battery chemistry technologies
        • Hybrid/Electrified powertrain control development
        • High voltage component integration
        • Traction motor/power electronics development
      • Knowledge in one or more of the following areas is advantageous:
        • Hybrid/electrical powertrain/vehicle simulation
        • Electronic controller hardware specifying and developing/sourcing
        • Powertrain integration to vehicle/chassis development and production release
        • Automotive control functionality/calibration development (Matlab/Simulink, etc)
        • Hybrid/electrification system and component testing
        • Communication network (e.g. CAN) development and testing knowledge
        • Functional Safety/ISO26262

    • Experience and Education
      • Bachelors’ degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering or related field
      • Masters’ degree preferred
      • PhD degree in Engineering desired
      • Minimum of 7+ years’ experience in area of expertise
