  • Overview

    The Technical Specialist - Transmission role with AVL Powertrain Engineering, Inc. will provide significant technical expertise to AVL engineering activities.  Qualified candidates for this position will have 7+ years of experience in the hardware area; design, hydraulics, OR overall transmission design.  Candidates should be able to identify design and DRE work performed in past work experiences to support their experience level.  In addition, commuication is a key factor in this role and candidates should be able to communicate to customers as well as to all levels of the project team. 


    Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Employer will not sponsor an applicant for a work visa for this position.



    Technical Roles:

    • Provide technical expertise & guidance to AVL PEI leadership
    • Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineering within the skill team
    • Create and maintain technical education resources
    • Participate in customer projects with new design/major re-designs as a technical expert and ensure best practice compliance
    • Lead & author large proposals spanning mutliple skill teams (>$250K)

    Methods Development Role:

    • Identifies and leads research and development projects
    • Develops and shares best practices/lessons learned methods and documentation
    • Generates and maintains benchmark data for subject area
    • Participates and leads industry forums or other panels of experts
    • Support of sales/business development efforts (industry shows/customer visitations/technical presentations)

    Planning/Coordination Roles:

    • Coordinate resource usage on appropriate projects (R&D, customer, internal, etc.)
    • Participate in the quotation/design review process to ensure deliverables are achievable
    • Reviews proposal, paper and presentation material for technical content and style.

    Specific Responsibilities - Transmission Design & Development:

    • Development of relationships with experts in Transmissions Field
    • Check design calculations for accuracy and improvement
    • Review and interpret CAE results, drive design changes
    • Identify and manage appropriate prototype part suppliers
    • Collaborate with leadership team to suggest improvements to transmission designs
    • Lead development and testing projects
    • Identify testing methodologies and implement


    • Benchmarking of applicable technology
    • Documentation of technical memory for respective area of expertise
    • Consult on testing, data analysis, and tools development
    • Communicate with Skill Teams for latest technical developments
    • Supply appropriate technical expertise and participate in discussions
    • Maintain and facilitate workshops in area of expertise
    • Initiate efforts to evaluate new business opportunities


    • Bachelors’ degree or equivalent in Mechanical Engineering or related field
    • Masters’ degree preferred
    • PhD degree in Engineering desired
    • Minimum of 7+ years’ experience
