Overview

AVL Powertrain Engineering is looking for an entry level addition to the systems area.  Qualified candidates will have a desire to educate and grow themselves as a young engineer in this field.  Desireable skills include exposure to matlab/simulink, embedded software, and powertrain systems.  Strong communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are also required. 

 

This positions will be located in Plymouth, MI.

 

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Employer will not sponsor an applicant for a work visa for this position

 

Responsibilities

The Systems Engineering Team delivers functional integration of mechanical, electrical, thermodynamic, and energy storage systems within hybrid and electric vehicle applications. The group is responsible for delivering a systems based approach to efficiently capture functional requirements as well as executing vehicle development programs.

 

The specific roles of a Project Engineer in this effort include:

  • Execute systems engineering principles to integrate hybrid and electric vehicle technology within powertrain system.
  • Definition and execution of: functional requirements, system boundaries, component & subsystem interface definition, functional safety, and performance tracking
  • Execute engineering activities according to project requirements.
  • Works on specific phases or aspects of projects such as technical studies, preparation of specifications, technical plans, powertrain system and component testing, data analysis and validation.
  • Supports/ensures data quality and writes technical project reports.
  • Reviews project for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, and customer requirements, including opinions and interpretations.
  • Coordinates activities concerned with technical development, scheduling, and resolving engineering test issues.
  • Development, execution, and tracking of BOM for powertrain system subsystems.
  • Plans and executes hybrid and electric vehicle research and development activities.
  • Supports, organizes, and contribute to customer meetings.
  • Other duties as required to insure project success.

 

Qualifications

A Project Engineer is expected to have demonstrated performance abilities in the following areas:

  • Commercial
    • Demonstration of project management for research project or engineering projects
    • Understanding of business development fundamentals and effective communication skills
  • Technical
    • Identify and support opportunities for technology development, process improvements, tool development, and knowledge capture and re-use.  

       

      Fundamental knowledge and understanding of the following areas:
      • Vehicle subsystems (powertrain, driveline, braking, chassis, & thermal management)
      • Hybrid Electric Powertrain Functional Operation and Optimization (inclusive of high voltage electrical systems)
      • High voltage component integration (power steering, Thermal management, Exportable power, onboard charging, power distribution, traction motor, HV energy storage)
      • Base Engine Performance
      • Transmission Performance
      • Vehicle Level Drivability, Fuel Economy, Emissions & Performance Attribute Optimization
      • Powertrain integration to vehicle / chassis development and production release
      • Hybrid/electrification technology within passenger car, medium duty, or heavy duty
  • Relational
    • Working effectively with customers and other program staff and team members
    • Accountability for individual and team delivery
    • Active pursuit of personal and departmental improvement
    • Effective communication with all levels of the program team
  • Experience and Education
    • 0+ years experience preferred
    • Coop and/or research experience in area of expertise
    • Experience within a collegiate design program or similar
    • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field required
