Project Engineer II - Battery Design

AVL Powertrain Engineering, Inc. is looking for an engineer who is experienced in battery pack design and development for electrified powertrain applications. This role will perform systems level design work on customer projects for battery system components.  Qualified candidates will possess at least 3 years of applicable experience and have proficient communication skills.  In addition, experience in at least 1 battery system/component is required as well as experience with Creo, NX and/or Catia V5. 


Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Employer will not sponsor an applicant for a work visa for this position.



  • Performs system level battery design work for HEV/EV applications on customer projects
  • Plans and formulates work flow of self and others to meet specified deadlines with a minimum of supervision
  • Has engineering responsibility for battery system design
  • Can lead specific phases of projects i.e. technical studies, specification writing, establishing technical plans
  • Co-ordinates project meetings, design reviews and sign off reviews
  • Resolves engineering and design conflicts
  • Owns all system engineering tasks relating to system responsibility i.e.
    • Battery system architecture
    • Resolving design constraints and establishing interfaces (electrical, thermal)
    • DFMEA’s, DVPR’s
    • BOM input
    • Coordinating input from other skill teams as required i.e. Analysis
    • Supplier negotiations and lead-time planning
  • Lead and author single team proposals
  • Interface with supporting engineering departments as required, e.g. CAE


  • Bachelor’s degree and five years’ experience in vehicle battery system design
  • Excellent knowledge of more than one area of vehicle battery systems design i.e. Cell/module layout, cooling system design, high & low voltage electrical system layout and specification, vehicle battery pack integration.
  • Can lead system engineering process i.e.
    • P-diagrams and boundary diagrams
    • DFMEA’s
    • DVP&R
  • Supplier negotiations
  • Communication and presentation skills
