Project Engineer II – Electrification Systems

AVL Powertrain Engineering, Inc is looking for a Project Engineer II who is knowledgeable and experienced in Electrification Systems.  Qualified candidates must possess at least 3 years of applicable experience and should be knowledgeable in hybrid/electrification technology, have experience in HV BMS design, and be experienced in HV BMS integration with other vehicle systems.  This role will provide technical and program engineering skills to Skill Team and Cross-Functional engineering program team activities, with a focus on the systems engineering aspects of electrification technology development and the vehicle integration of these technologies.

The Systems Engineering Team works to define project architectures and requirements, and delivers functional integration of mechanical, electrical, thermodynamic, energy storage systems and CAV technologies within conventional, hybrid and electric vehicle applications. The group is responsible for delivering a systems based approach to efficiently capture and manage functional requirements as well as executing vehicle development programs (in particular vehicle technology integration), system architecture development, including verification/validation of the identified and implemented functional requirements.


The specific roles of a Systems Engineering –Electrification, Project Engineer II include:

  • Execute systems engineering principles to integrate electrification technologies within hybrid and electric vehicle powertrain system platforms.
  • Definition and execution of: functional requirements, system boundaries, component & subsystem interface definition, functional safety, and performance tracking
  • Provide technical guidance to quality and reliability engineering and assist with FMEA activities
  • Supports Functional Safety / ISO26262 activities.
  • Plans and manages engineering activities according to project requirements.
  • Works on specific phases or aspects of projects such as technical studies, preparation of specifications, technical plans, powertrain system and component testing, data analysis and validation.
  • Supports/ensures data quality and writes technical project reports.
  • Reviews project for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, and customer requirements, including opinions and interpretations.
  • Coordinates activities concerned with technical development, scheduling, and resolving engineering test issues.
  • Plans and executes electrification research and development activities.
  • Supports, organizes, and leads customer meetings.
  • Other duties as required to insure project success.


A Systems Engineering –Electrification, Project Engineer II is expected to have demonstrated performance abilities in the following areas:

  • Commercial
    • Quote Leader for a small size program
    • Support the Business Development process for specific clients
    • Efficient on time delivery of program expectations with consistently high feedback
  • Technical
    • Identify and support opportunities for technology development, process improvements, tool development, and knowledge capture and re-use.
    • Published at least 1 paper accepted by a professional organization or 1 patent awarded
    • Familiarity with regulatory and market segment requirements and end-user expectations
    • Knowledge of hybrid/electrification technology within passenger car, medium duty, or heavy duty
    • Hybrid/electric powertrain functionality knowledge, and optimization experience (inclusive of high voltage electrical systems)
    • Knowledge in at least two of the following areas:
      • High voltage component integration (Power steering, Thermal management, Onboard charging, Off-board charging, Power distribution (including DC/DC HVIL, etc), HV battery systems, Traction motor systems (including inverters))
      • Battery Management System development and integration
      • Traction motor/inverter development
      • HV battery development
      • Communication network (e.g. CAN) development and testing knowledge
    • Knowledge in one or more of the following areas would be beneficial:
      • Base Engine Performance & Emissions Performance Requirements
      • Transmission Performance & Efficiency Optimization
      • Vehicle Level Drivability, Fuel Economy, Emissions & Performance Attribute Optimization
      • Hybrid/electrical powertrain/vehicle simulation
      • Electronic controller hardware specifying and developing/sourcing
      • Powertrain integration to vehicle / chassis development and production release
      • Automotive control functionality/calibration development (Matlab/Simulink, etc)
      • Hybrid/electrification system and component testing
      • Functional Safety/ISO26262
  • Relational
    • Leadership or member of small to medium size technical teams
    • Working effectively with customers and other program staff and team members
    • Accountability for individual and team delivery
    • Program and resource coordination
    • Active pursuit of personal and departmental improvement
    • Effective communication with all levels of the program team
  • Experience and Education
    • Minimum of 3 – 5 years of experience in area of expertise with a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related field required. Master’s preferred.
