Overview

AVL Powertrain Engineering, Inc. is looking to add a Technical Specialist in the Powertrain Transmissions area to our team.  Qualified candidates should posses at least 15 years of applicable experience in order to be considered.  Strong communication and customer interfacing skills are required.  Experience in leading teams is preferred.   

General Description:

Capable of performing Transmission Technical Specialist role: provides significant technical expertise to AVL engineering activities, and is a subject matter expert in his/her field.

Roles:

Technical / Engineering

Provide technical guidance and mentoring to engineers within the skill team

Provide technical expertise and guidance to AVL PEI leadership

Create and maintains technical education resources (Transmission Design documents)

Participate in customer projects with new design/major redesigns as a technical expert and ensure best practice compliance

 

Management

Lead and author large proposals spanning multiple skill teams

Participant in peer review process for proposals and projects

 

Methods Development

Identifies and leads research and development projects

Develops and shares best practice / lessons learned methods and documentation

Generates and maintains benchmark data for subject area

 

Marketing / Sales

Participate and lead industry forums or other panels of experts

Support of sales/business development efforts (industry shows/customer visitations/technical presentations)

 

Planning / Coordination

Coordinate resource usage on appropriate projects (R&D, customer, internal, etc.)

Participate in the quotation/design review process to ensure deliverables are achievable

Work with Customers to ensure proposals and projects meet expectations

 

Communication

Reviews proposal, paper and presentation material for technical content and style.

Participates in customer presentations for sales and reporting project status

 

Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. Employer will not sponsor an applicant for a work visa for this position.

Responsibilities

Specific Responsibilities:

Development of relationships with experts in transmission and driveline

Check projects for accuracy and improvement

Collaborate with leadership team to suggest improvements to processes and knowledge base

Lead projects for transmission and driveline design, testing, development coordinating with various other skill teams with AVL global and PEI as well as operations. 

 

Deliverables:

Benchmarking of applicable technology

Documentation of technical memory for respective area of expertise

Consult on testing, data analysis, and tools development

Communicate with Skill Teams for latest technical developments

Supply appropriate technical expertise and participate in discussions

Maintain and facilitate workshops in area of expertise

Initiate efforts to evaluate new business opportunities

Qualifications

 

Qualifications/Skills:

  • Technical
    • Identify, initiate, and support opportunities for technology development, process improvements, tool development, and knowledge capture and re-use.
    • Familiarity with regulatory and market segment requirements and end-user expectations
    • Development experience with one or more of the following transmission types:
      • Step Gear Planetary Automatic Transmissions
      • Continuously Variable Transmission
      • Dual Clutch Transmissions
      • Manual Transmission
    • Independent functionality in one or more of the following areas:
        • Transmission clutch design and testing
        • Transmission lubrication principles
        • Transmission hydraulic principles (design and development) including:
          • Valve Bodies and actuators
          • Pumps (mechanical and e-pumps)
          • Transmission Coolin
        • Knowledge of Transmission Control Algorithms
        • Knowledge Transmission Kinematic
  • Working experience with some or all of the following tools:
      • Calibration Tools (Etas INCA, ATI Vision, Vector CANape, CANalyzer, etc)
      • AVL Concerto
      • CAD (Pro-E, Catia, NX, etc.)
      • Word / Excel
  • Education
    • Bachelors degree in Engineering
    • Masters degree and / or 15+ years of experience preferred
